Stiffies

Stiffies Underwear is a breakthrough in men's underpants designed to keep those embarrassing moments for the guys to a minimum. As presented by ABC's New Inventors, Stiffies feature the 'erection direction pocket' which means, in the words of the inventor, "it keeps wood next to the house." On a hot day, the pocket is a place 'to put your old fella in, giving him a break from the two wookies.'

Below is a transcript of an interview done by Alice (one of the Smart Moves presenters) with Andrew Archer, the inventor of Stiffies Underwear.

Alice: Excellent Andrew, here are the questions. It mentions on the ABC website that you have been inventing since childhood. What kind of things did you come up with, and did your ideas evolve with you over the years?

Andrew: A magnetically floating car was one idea. We had just been shown how magnets worked at school, I had watched Star Wars and thought the floating speeder bikes were cool. Magnets seemed like a possible way of achieving that goal.

A better skateboard truck was another idea and improved snow boarding clothes and equipment were others. My ideas generally don't develop or evolve unless I actually put time and work into them. However you might come across a piece of information or situation that enhances an idea or the feasibility of it at a later date.

Alice: What do you think it takes to become an 'inventor'?

Andrew: You have to be able to see an answer or solution to a problem then have enough belief in that idea to do something about it.

Alice: What are the advantages of Stiffies over other underwear?

Andrew: Fitted underwear is notorious for squashing everything together and on a hot day, you have to keep readjusting. The greatest advantage of Stiffies is having a place to put your old fella when it isn't stiff so it doesn't get stuck to everything else.

The second best advantage, if you have only your underwear on with a stiffy in the pocket, it looks like an impressive edifice, not a self erecting circus tent. My now girlfriend said it definitely enhances how you look. (Possibly a come-back for the wonderbra)

Alice: Obviously, you believe the greatest use for Stiffies will be in disguising...well stiffies. However, do you think that its advantages in sport might make it appealing to sportsmen? You could probably whack an extra compartment on the front to slip a cricket box in!

Andrew: Disguising stiffies is one of the four key advantages, the other two issues have been previously discussed and the fourth is outlined by your question. I have a had a few larger build guys say that they really like how the pocket keeps everything in place when playing soccer or doing judo.

Alice: One of the most disturbing scenes I ever witnessed of this nature (stiffies) was at a school swimming carnival. Have you considered a swimwear line?

Andrew: Very much so. In this situation the stiffy management side of the underwear is the number one asset.

Alice: Now you have admitted that the underwear is not foolproof, but can 'fail' up to 30-40% of the time. What exactly does that mean?

Andrew: As you stand up and sit down during the day your penis inevitably works it's way out of the pocket, or down into the pocket where it is harder for the pocket to perform its said function. The solution for this is either a discrete brush/bump in the direction he is heading, or put him back in when you're next at the rest rooms.

Alice: I am pretty sure I shouldn't ask this, but my scientific curiosity has got the better of me. Was there any research undertaken? If so, how was it done?

Andrew: Yeah it took me fifty prototypes or adjustments to get them right and they had to be comfortable and the pocket had to work. So, there was the obligatory Ralph magazine viewing or imagining Gabrielle Ritchens calling and saying she was going to be dropping by to help with testing the pocket. But she never bloody called.

There were days of testing to see how long it would stay in one pocket compared to another design. Then testing the comfort of the legs and overall fit of the underwear. I wore out a pair with two different leg styles so I could make my mind up which style to go with.

Then there was long life testing, material testing to get the best type, crotch-line position testing plus stitch, seam and pattern testing. So now I can safely say they are probably the best pair of men's fitted underwear in the world.

Alice: Do you have any advice for young inventors out there?

Andrew: Stop putting it off and do it. Speak to the Inventors Society they are a great help. Discuss the idea with friends that you not only trust but ones who will tell you if you shouldn't go ahead with it. Maybe have them sign confidential non-disclosure agreement.

If the idea doesn't work come up with something else. Only spend what you can afford and have a stop point, where if it just isn't happening you put it aside and move on to something else. Try and develop the idea as much as you can yourself before you approach an attorney or anyone else.

Alice: Do you sell many at the moment?

Andrew: Yes, the sales are going very well considering the small amount of publicity we have had so far.

Alice: Do you have plans for expansion?

Andrew: Always have, that was part of the reason for doing it. I am just trying to find the right investors and buyers at the moment.
