What are the Phase 2 programmes?
Questacon reckons the programmes
listed below are the best for Phase 2. Most of the
programmes have excellent prizes (cash, travel and heaps more!) and you
can come up with your own project topic so that it focuses on what really
interests you. The programmes can even help to set you up with a mentor:
someone who has been-there done-that and who can help you out. If you've
got a dream idea but lack the technical expertise or background to make
it happen... a mentor can be really helpful.
Phase
2 programmes focusing on science, engineering and technology
BHP Billiton
Science Awards
A more intense science based research project that aims to solve
or investigate a problem scientifically. Pretty much any area of science
is on the cards and there are some massive cash prizes available. Do
it by yourself or with up to two mates.
CSIRO's
CREST Awards
Creativity in Science and Technology Awards. CREST looks at a project
to solve problems in the real world; think of a creative product or
solution that makes the world a better place or life a little easier.
You choose your own project - heaps of students do CREST instead of
normal assignments. But wait there's more... there are no due dates!
UNSW AGL Sustainable
Living Competition
Find a creative sustainable solution to an environmental problem.
If you care about your local environment and want to act to make
a difference, solve a problem, help someone out... then this is the
project for you. You can work by yourself, in a team or even with
your whole class.
State-based Science Teacher Association awards.
Depending on where we are touring at the time, we also include different
state-based programmes. Contact (smartmoves@questacon.edu.au)
for more info on your state's programmes.
Phase
2 Programmes focusing on Business
ABW
Enterprise Education
As part of a team you run a computer-simulated business, selling
your own invented product (your product can be anything - it doesn't
even have to be possible!) and making all the decisions. Buy factories,
employ workers, film and edit your own TV ad and even try to sell
your product to other students. ABW takes over your school for a
whole week.
Young
Achievement Australia
As part of a real small business your team can come up with and
manufacture its own product and try to sell it in the real world
– run your own small business. Young Achievement Australia
helps with the development of a business plan, raising cash to start
things up and even puts you in touch with business experts.
