Advice for Educators and Parents

Be encouraging!

How can you help a young person interested in science, engineering, technology and entrepreneurship?

Young achievers in science and business have at least one thing in common – they had someone supporting them: either family, friends or teachers. Apart from financial strains of studying or developing a business, there are many social concerns from young scientists and entrepreneurs.

  • What will their friends think?
  • Will they be spending ‘forever’ studying or building a business?
  • Are they capable enough to do further study or establish a business?
  • Where should they go for advice?

As a parent or teacher, you can:

  • help teenagers to gain experience by enrolling in an education programme such as Smart Moves. This allows them to learn processes and methods in a supportive environment.
  • find role models through this website, the media and your local community. Seeing people who have achieved in tertiary study and business is important for getting young people to realise that it is possible to move in those directions.
  • make contacts with like-minded people (such as other teenagers with similar goals, scientists and business advisers). The Smart Moves Invention Convention aims to do this.
  • give them experience in interacting in an adult environment. For example, encourage them to call mentors themselves and coach them in professional telephone manner.
