Starting Your Own Business

Most young business people say the hardest (and scariest) step is getting started. You’ve got an idea for a new innovation, but now what? How do you know what to do? Where do you go for advice?

One of the first things you should do is seek business advice and advice on how to write a business plan and also talk with advisors at IP Australia about patenting your idea. Things can and do go wrong, but if you’ve got a great idea, and you work hard and stick at it, your business could take off and your future could be set!

A great place to go for some help is your local Business Enterprise Centre (BEC). These are non-profit organisations and there’s usually one in most regions. The BECs run seminars on small business practices and will be able to give you a lot of inside advice.

Give your local Chamber of Commerce a call also. They may be able to provide a business mentor who can give you a helping hand.

Check out youth networks like ENYA, or the Australian Government’s site Business.gov.au for info and advice in starting your own business.
