Getting business advice and writing a business plan

Questacon > Smart Moves > Business and Competitions > Business Advice & Business Plans

Most young business people say the hardest (and scariest) step is getting started. How do you know what to do? Where do you go for advice? When starting a small business, you’ll need lots of financial, legal and business advice.

One of the first things you should do is seek business advice, write a business plan and also talk with advisors at IP Australia about patenting your idea. Things can and do go wrong. But if you’ve got a great idea, and you work hard and stick at it, your business could take off and your future could be set!

Will you be prepared for bad luck?

How will you cope if you hit hard times?

It is so much better to plan and know what action to take rather than panic. If your business threatens to collapse around you when things go wrong, you need to know what to do to keep things on track.

A business plan shows your financial backers that you are prepared for things to go wrong. Things like slow sales, surprise expenses, changes in the market, and sudden shortfalls in supply…

A great place to go for some help is your local Business Enterprise Centres (BECs). These are non-profit organisations and there’s usually one in most regions. The BECs run seminars on small business practices and will be able to give you a lot of inside advice.

Give your local Chamber of Commerce a call also. They may be able to provide a business mentor who can give you a helping hand.
